Get Your Home and Yard Ready for Fall in Sheboygan County
Cooler days and changing leaves bring a new list of home and yard projects to Sheboygan, Plymouth, Kohler, and surrounding communities. Fall is the time to clear leaves, prepare garden beds, seal drafts, and handle small repairs before Wisconsin’s winter weather arrives.
From weekend yard cleanup to making your home more comfortable, Trilling True Value is your local hardware store for practical supplies, dependable tools, and friendly advice throughout the season.
Trilling True Value: Your Fall Project Partner
A little preparation now can make the colder months easier. Start with the projects that matter most around your home: keeping walkways clear, checking doors and windows, and putting outdoor spaces in order.
At Trilling True Value, our knowledgeable staff can help you choose supplies for your project and answer questions along the way. Bring your measurements, a photo, or the part you need to replace so we can help you find a good fit.
Fall Lawn Care: Manage Leaves and Prepare for Winter
Your lawn still needs attention as temperatures drop. Regular mowing and leaf cleanup help keep thick, wet leaves from covering the grass as the growing season winds down.
Fall Lawn Care Essentials:
- Leaf rakes and yard cleanup tools
- Leaf bags and yard waste containers
- Work gloves
- Lawn fertilizer suited to your fall care plan
- Grass seed for early fall repairs
- Spreaders
- Lawn mower maintenance supplies
Continue mowing while grass is growing. A light layer of leaves can be chopped with your mower, but remove heavy piles that form a mat over the lawn. Plan grass seeding for early fall, when new growth has time to become established before winter.
Fall Gardening: Finish the Harvest and Prepare Your Beds
As vegetable gardens slow down and flowers finish blooming, a few thoughtful tasks can help prepare your garden for next year. Gather your supplies and browse our seasonal specials as you plan your fall projects.
Fall Garden Supplies:
- Garden soil and compost
- Mulch
- Hand tools and pruners
- Garden gloves
- Watering cans and garden hoses
- Containers for storing garden supplies
Remove diseased plant material and pull remaining weeds. Leave healthy perennial stems and seed heads where they can provide winter shelter for beneficial insects and food for birds. Fall is also planting time for hardy spring-flowering bulbs. Continue watering plants as needed until the ground freezes.
Pest Prevention: Help Keep Unwanted Guests Outside
Cooler weather can send mice and other pests looking for shelter. Checking small openings around your home now can help prevent problems in kitchens, basements, and garages later.
Fall Pest Prevention Supplies:
- Door sweeps and weatherstripping
- Screen repair supplies
- Metal mesh for suitable pest entry points
- Caulk and sealants
- Mouse traps
- Storage containers with secure lids
Look for gaps around doors, windows, and utility openings. Choose repair materials suited to each location, and keep required vents open for airflow. Store birdseed and pet food in closed containers. Follow the directions for any traps or pest control products, including placement away from children and pets.
Stay Comfortable: Reduce Drafts Before Colder Weather
A drafty doorway or worn window seal can make a room feel chilly. Simple repairs around doors and windows can help reduce air leaks and make your home more comfortable during fall and winter.
Home Weatherproofing Essentials:
- Weatherstripping
- Door sweeps
- Caulk and caulking guns
- Window insulation film kits
- Furnace filters
- Measuring tapes and basic hand tools
Check existing seals for cracks, gaps, and wear. Use weatherstripping where doors and windows move, and caulk suitable gaps around stationary frames. Check your furnace filter and follow your equipment’s replacement schedule. Bring the filter size or an old filter’s measurements when shopping for a replacement.
Outdoor Living: Enjoy Crisp Days and Prepare for Storage
There is still time for backyard meals and afternoons on the patio. Fall is also a good opportunity to clean outdoor furniture, organize grilling supplies, and prepare items for storage.
Outdoor Cleanup Supplies:
- Grill brushes and grilling accessories
- Patio and outdoor furniture cleaners
- Scrub brushes and cleaning cloths
- Deck stains and sealers
- Outdoor lighting supplies
- Outdoor-rated extension cords
- Storage totes
Clear wet leaves from steps and patios, clean furniture, and let items dry before storing them. Check exterior lights as daylight hours shorten. For deck staining or sealing, follow the product’s temperature and drying requirements so the finish has time to cure before colder weather.
Fall Home Maintenance: Take Care of Small Repairs
A loose gutter, cracked seal, or worn door latch is easier to address before snow and ice arrive. Walk around your home and make a short list of repairs to handle while conditions allow.
Fall Maintenance Supplies:
- Gutter cleaning tools
- Exterior caulk and sealants
- Exterior paint and wood repair products
- Replacement screws, hinges, and hardware
- Work gloves and eye protection
- Flashlights and batteries
Remove gutter debris using tools you can operate safely from the ground. Check windows, siding, and exterior hardware for damage. Disconnect and drain garden hoses before freezing weather, and prepare outdoor equipment for storage according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Story From A Customer
This past spring, my husband and I stopped in your store while visiting family in Sheboygan. He was wearing his “I like romantic walks through hardware stores” t-shirt at the time, and we’re fairly certain it was you who gifted him with a Trilling Hardware shirt – which only made our visit to your store even more enjoyable than it already was, because we LOVE a good hardware store!
We talk about it whenever he wears his Trilling t-shirt (we’re in Washington State, which wasn’t formed until after your store opened!), and I came across this photo of him wearing the shirt when we stopped at Yellowstone on our way back west. We look forward to our next visit, and just wanted to say thank you again for having a great store and staff.
Sincerely,
Dave and Barbara Henderson

Watch AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN in Sheboygan as he talks about various things including the oldest hardware store in Wisconsin.
The Trilling True Value Hardware Story
In 1850, August Trilling, a first generation German immigrant opened a General Store on 8th and Pennsylvania Ave. At that time all stores were general stores supplying customers with hardware, turpentine and even whiskey.
In the late 1890’s, August moved the store to Michigan Avenue and in 1911 Trilling Hardware moved to it’s now present location of 9th and Michigan Avenue. Over the years this location has seen many changes from removing the display windows on the northeast corner, to adding the garden center in late 1995.
From August Trilling, Trilling Hardware has been handed down to the Trilling sons. In 1995, Hugo Trilling, the Great Grandson of August sold Trilling Hardware to Ervin Martens, who at the time of purchase owned another hardware store in Milwaukee. Ervin has remained the owner of Trilling Hardware and has expanded his ownership to two other True Value stores with one in Reedsburg and one in Waupun. Today all four stores work together in purchasing all the right products for our customers.
Department selection is the key that has kept Trilling True Value around for over 170 years, where else can you go to buy just one nut or bolt when you need it or that one of kind plumbing part for an older faucet.
Great Customer Service, Competitive Prices and Convenience is what has kept customers coming back.
